Frequently asked questions about transferring
How many credits do I need and what is the required GPA to transfer to Central Michigan University?
Overall GPA, number of credits completed and rigor of a student’s curriculum are all considered in any admissions decision. Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities need to be submitted to CMU in order to be considered as an applicant. Additionally, students with fewer than 30 credits will need to present high school transcripts in addition to transfer information. Students with further questions will need to contact a CMU admissions counselor to get the answers based on their own specific situation.
When should I apply?
It is usually best to apply six to nine months in advance of the beginning of the semester you wish you to start at CMU. However, it is still possible to apply if you are not within the six- to nine-month time frame. Students with further questions will need to contact a CMU admissions counselor to get the answers based on their own specific situation.
Will my credits transfer?
We have online transfer guides and articulation agreements (a two-year associate’s degree plan) for the 29 Michigan community colleges, and an online transfer credit equivalency table that lists all courses from Michigan community colleges and other courses transferred previously from other colleges and universities. If you have further and more specific questions please contact a CMU admissions counselor.
Do I need to attend an orientation?
Yes, all incoming transfer students must attend an academic orientation. This is not an introduction to the layout or social life of campus, but a comprehensive academic advising and planning session. Students build their first semester schedule, meet their academic advisor and learn how each of the their credits transfer into their intended academic program.
Does CMU offer my program?
CMU lists our academic majors/minors online. However, since we may call an area of interest or a career by another name (for example, what a student may think is advertising, we might refer to as marketing), it is advised to contact a CMU admissions counselor if further questions exist.
Are there any scholarship opportunities available to incoming transfer students?
CMU does offer scholarships to qualifying Michigan community college students based on their academic performance. These scholarships are listed on this Web site.
