In the beginning of the Fall semester special service area’s called, “ResNet Depot Stations” are set up around campus to assist student’s if they have a problem getting their computer working on the network. There is one Depot Station located near each of the four Residence hall complexes. This year the Depots will be located in following locations:

  • East Residence Halls – Woldt Lab Learning Center
  • South Residence Halls – Merrill Terrace Conference Room 033
  • North Residence Halls – Barnes Seminar Room 3D
  • Towers Residence Halls – Kulhavi Room 142

The depots will be open from August 15th through September 4th, all week, from 12 noon to 9 pm.

Below is some helpful information that will assist you in the goal of getting connected to the CMU network.

In order to maintain security and provide a stable networking environment CMU requires its student’s computers pass a series of checks before they are allowed to access the internet. Technicians will be available for assistance with configuring your personal computing device, but you can avoid the wait by performing a few easy steps.

Preparing your computer

The following preventive steps from your home internet connection will help you pass your initial on-line computer registration security check, which will occur the first time you connect your computer to CMU’s network.

Windows update

To update your Windows operating system:

Click on the Start Menu, go to All Programs, select Windows Update.
OR
Open your Internet Explorer browser, click on “Tools” in the menu bar, and select “Windows Update”.

Virus scanner

CMU provides McAfee’s virus scanner to CMU students at no charge. You can download it from our Software Download Center. You will be prompted for your Global ID and password, which can be obtained from the Helpdesk if you do not know it. You can also stop by the Helpdesk, located in the Park Library, to pick up a Virus Scan CD. Remember to uninstall any other virus scanner you may have installed before installing McAfee!

Spyware scanner

Spybot is a free spyware remover. It’s also on the CD available at the Helpdesk, or you can download it from: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html (don’t forget to keep it updated as well!)

When you get to campus

When you come to campus in the fall, follow these four easy steps to get on the network:
  1. Plug in your Ethernet cable.
  2. Turn on your computer.
  3. Open your web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc), and try connecting to an internet website.
  4. Follow the directions on the screen to register your computer on the network using your CMU Global ID.

You can obtain your CMU Global ID from the Helpdesk at (989) 774-3662.

You can test your computer from home to see if it will pass the security and registration process by going to http://reg.cmich.edu. You will need your CMU Global ID during this process.

By following these basic steps you can avoid any delays or problems with accessing Central Michigan University’s internet service. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this process, please contact the CMU Helpdesk at (989) 774-3662.
