CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

March 22, 2006

TO: The CMU Community
FROM: Michael Rao
SUBJECT: CMU Update 59

The information in the sections below is offered in an attempt to be useful and informative. As most of you know, this is one of many periodic updates that will be posted on the web to help share information and engage members of the university community in topics of interest and concern.

Advocacy in State Budget Process

As I recently testified to the Senate Higher Education Subcommittee again arguing for more equal per-student funding, I realized that your advocacy again this year for equitable per-student funding for CMU continues to be critical. Talking points that you may wish to include in your letters, sample letters, addresses for government officials, and other information can be accessed at http://www.cmich.edu/govrelations. Please help as much as you can. Thank you.

Update on CMU 2010 Request for Proposals

In response to the CMU 2010 RFP process, 43 proposals were received.  Sixteen proposals were received addressing Priority I, nine for Priorities II and IV, five for Priority III, and three for Priority V. The Priority Committees are reviewing the proposals and will make their recommendations to the Institutional Strategic Planning Committee (ISPC). I look forward to receiving the ISPC recommendations in early April.

Additional Information about Professional Development Support

Reflecting on the professional development support for faculty and staff mentioned in Update 58, I thought it might be helpful to provide more information about these awards.  Initially, there will be a pool of $15,000 for one-time awards.  To provide assistance to as many as possible, the awards will usually range from $100-$1000, typically as a match for funds provided by the requestor’s department, college, or other source.  The awards will focus on national leadership opportunities in the areas identified by CMU 2010 or one’s discipline or field.

Research Travel Fund

Also available through the President’s Office is a research travel fund (currently budgeted at $13,500 annually), used to make one-time awards of up to $1000 for travel to pursue external grant funding.  Please visit http://www.orsp.cmich.edu/pdf/grantdev.pdf for more information.

CMU Hosting AITP National Collegiate Conference

The Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) annually hosts the AITP National Collegiate Conference in late March or early April.  In 2007, CMU will host this annual conference in Detroit.  The AITP-CMU Student Chapter has been attending this conference for several years and has won many awards, most recently in April 2004.  The Business Information Systems department houses the Management Information Systems (MIS) major and the Master of Science in Information Systems. The MIS Advisory Board and I believe that hosting this conference will bring good visibility to CMU.  Compuware, EDS, Delphi and Blue Cross Blue Shield are only four of the corporate members who strongly support this project and have also said that they would identify senior executives to speak at this conference.

Posters in the Capitol

On April 25, CMU undergraduate students will present “Posters in the Capitol,” featuring their work on a wide range of significant problems, issues, and interests.  CMU’s “Posters in the Capitol” will take place from 10:30-2:30 in the State Capitol Rotunda.
