CMU 2010
The F/Y '08 request for proposals has gone out and proposals are due on Monday, January 15. These will be reviewed by the relevant priority committee (or appropriate subcommittee). A ranked list of proposals will be submitted from the Priority Committee to the Institutional Strategic Planning Committee at the beginning of February. Final decisions will be announced in March. For more information about the F/Y '08 RFP process or progress on previously funded initiatives, please visit the CMU 2010 web site at www.planning.cmich.edu.
State Budget Update
As most of us know, the economic outlook in Michigan and the State’s financial condition remains uncertain. A Revenue Estimating Conference is scheduled on January 18, which is expected to identify a budget shortfall in the current and upcoming fiscal year as high as $1 billion. Also at issue is how Michigan will replace as much as $2 billion of revenue lost when the Single Business Tax is eliminated in 2007. Governor Granholm has appointed an emergency financial advisory panel, chaired by former governors William Milliken and James Blanchard, to provide her recommendations by the end of January on how the State can avoid similar crises in the future. The effect of the financial crisis on appropriations to universities in the current or next year is still unknown.
Federal Update
Senator Carl Levin and Congressman Dave Camp have announced that CMU will receive $1.3 million in federal support from the Department of Defense for the development of new nanotechnologies through CMU's dendrimer enhanced water remediation program. CMU researchers along with researchers from California Institute of Technology and DNT are working on a project that will demonstrate the feasibility of removing desired contaminates from water, and creation of new materials for the remediation of water. This is the first year the program has received support from the federal government.
Director of Federal Programs Toby Roth and I will seek additional support for CMU from the federal government and welcome ideas for significant projects from anyone. Please contact Toby Roth with your ideas at rothj1t@cmich.edu.
Academic Division Senior Officer Positions
The AVP for Diversity search committee, chaired by Pamela Gates, has met several times and the position has been posted in a number of diverse publications. The committee expects to start interviewing candidates in late March and hopes to complete its work in April.
Search committees are in place for the Vice Provost for Research and the College of Graduate Studies Dean positions. Wayne Osborn is the committee chair for the Research position and Dan Vetter is chairing the Graduate Studies search. The committee members are in place and the committees will be meeting next week. Campus interviews are expected for both positions in April.
My thanks to Pam Gates, who is serving as interim dean of the College of HSBS and to Mitch Hall, History, who is interim dean of the college while Gary Shapiro is serving as interim executive vice president and provost.
Jane Matty is now interim associate dean of the College of CST (replacing Rich St. Andre, who has returned to teaching) and Diane Krider has been named associate dean in the College of CCFA. Effective February 1, Kathryn Koch will become interim associate dean of the College of EHS when Dianne Mark departs for a dean’s position at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Congratulations to Jane, Diane, and Kathryn and thank you and best wishes to Dianne and Rich for their many contributions in their associate dean positions.

Congratulations to CMU Football
Congratulations to the players and coaches of CMU’s 2006 Football team for their success this season, including winning the MAC championship for the first time since 1994 and CMU’s first-ever Division I-A bowl game win at the Motor City Bowl on December 26. These successes have helped focus national attention on the university and its academic programs. Welcome to new head coach Butch Jones, who rejoined CMU in January, after previously coaching here for seven seasons from 1998-2004. The university looks forward to continued success under his leadership.
Diversity Initiatives
In December, I issued an extensive set of charges associated with diversity issues raised at the December 6 trustees-student liaison committee meeting. They are in a memo charging various officers to develop time-sensitive plans, which I will receive over the next few months, with respect to how to address each of these issues, including:
