Hazardous Materials Release
There are hazardous materials all around us. They are in buildings, on the roads and railroads, and underground.
TAKE ACTION
If the hazardous materials release is within the area where you are, immediately EVACUATE.
- Alert others nearby of the problem and safely leave the immediate area.
- Consider going outside to fresh air.
If you are contaminated, remove the substance from your clothes or skin by washing with copious amounts of water.
- If the substance is reactive with water follow the Safety Data Sheet for decontamination.
CALL 911 and tell the dispatcher the type of emergency, location, and if anyone is contaminated or has decontaminated.
If the hazardous materials release is from a source away from your location follow local responders' directions. This could include:
- Sheltering in place or evacuating.
- Closing windows and doors.
- Blocking air vents.
- Going to a higher or lower level in your building.

Emergency Action Plans have been created for each building and provide specific procedures to follow during a hazardous materials release.
- It's important to review these Emergency Action Plans prior to any emergency.
- Know what hazardous materials are near you and also the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are located.
- Know the difference between evacuation and shelter in place.
