Impact is designed to
help students develop problem solving and creative thinking skills.
The program will utilize a 10-point problem
solving model based on similar models used in Destination Imagination and
the Science Olympiad. It begins by showing methods to clearly define the
problem, and then encourages students to examine the situation and
evaluate whether there is a more efficient or productive solution.
The second portion of the program will afford students the opportunity to
apply what they have learned in the Friday session to a challenge course.
A series of eight obstacles/scenarios will be created in which the team
must use the principles from the model to solve the problem in the most
efficient manner. For example, at one station, the team will be given
materials to construct a rocket from a 2-litre bottle. Their objective
will be to maximize the distance traveled and time aloft. Teams will be
scored for each initiative and the cumulative point total will determine
our winning team.
