THE LEAD PROGRAM

The LEAD program is designed to help Central Michigan University undergraduate students through a variety of leadership skill-building programs offered over the course of their college experience. LEAD shapes experiences for development allowing each individual student to achieve his or her own unique growth and to build a repertoire as a leader throughout his or her time at Central Michigan University.   Four specific tiers signify levels of development students have achieved as leaders. PROGRAMS FOR ASPIRING LEADERS
New CMU freshman, students looking to become involved on campus, build leadership skills, and exposure to opportunity are encouraged to participate in one or more aspiring leader programs, these include Leadership Camp, Leadership Safari, and the Leadership Mentoring Experience.
 

 

 

LEADERSHIP CAMP
At Camp you will spend time with the brightest, most energetic, and most promising group of new students of your graduating class! Upper-Class students at CMU with extensive leadership experience will serve as facilitators for your group. They will help you explore the Social Change Model of leadership development and motivate you to become involved in leadership opportunities even before you attend your first class on campus.

LEADERSHIP SAFARI
Leadership Safari is a guided experience to help new CMU students learn more about leadership and leadership opportunities at Central Michigan University.  Over 1,300 students participate annually. Especially helpful for first year and transfer students, Safari provides an opportunity for new students to learn how to be academically successful in college and how they can get involved in activities to develop their leadership abilities both in and outside of the classroom. Furthermore, by joining us on campus early, students will have more time to get settled into college living prior to the start of classes.

    LEADERSHIP MENTORING EXPERIENCE
The LEAD Me Mentoring Program is a way for incoming freshmen to gain a resource, mentor, and friend in an established CMU student.  Campus leaders will take freshman mentees, form relationships, and work together to build and develop leadership skills.  Becoming a mentor is a way to help new students; as well as maintaining and improving one’s own leadership skills.

PROGRAMS FOR EMERGING LEADERS
Typically, an merging leadership is a freshman or sophomore who is active in a CMU organization and wants to improve leadership skills or become prepared to assume a leadership role in an group. Emerging Leader programs Include the Alpha Leadership Experience, Leadership Impact, the Leadership Mentoring Experience, and a workshop series presented by the Leadership Resource Consultants.
 

 

THE ALPHA LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE
As an Alpha participant you will participate in four interactive development sessions and a graduation ceremony. During the four sessions you will be guided by experienced student facilitators and hear from known campus leaders, network with other students, and continue to explore and develop your leadership potential.

IMPACT
IMPACT is designed to help students develop problem solving and creative thinking skills.  This program will feature a afternoon session in which participants are arranged into small teams and are guided through a problem solving workshop.  The program will utilize a 10-point problem solving model based on similar models used in Destination Imagination and the Science Olympiad.  It begins by showing methods to clearly define the problem, and then encourages students to examine the situation and evaluate whether there is a more efficient or productive solution.

PROGRAMS FOR TRANSITIONAL LEADERS
Transitional leaders are sophomores or juniors, usually that holds a leadership or executive board position in a Registered Student Organization and is seeking improved leadership skills and to further develop a campus network.  Transitional leadership programs include the Connections Leadership Conference and the LeaderShape Institute®.

 

CONNECTIONS CONFERENCE
Held each fall, the Connections Leadership Conference serves as a networking workshop for campus leaders. Through collaboration, relevant issues are discussed with the intent of making a positive impact on campus and in the community. Connections is open to all CMU students with varying levels of leadership experience.

THE LEADERSHAPE INSTITUTE
The LeaderShape Institute is an interactive, energizing and unique experience that builds leadership skills no other program can match. And since 1986, over 20,000 participants from all over the world have graduated from LeaderShape.  It is six days of non-stop self-discovery and learning from practical experiences that build your leadership concepts and abilities. LeaderShape will take place May 8-10, 2008.

PROGRAMS FOR THE ADVANCED LEADER
Juniors and seniors, or sophomores with exceptional leadership experience, who are the leaders of a CMU organization and seeking to become a group facilitator or promote the development of future leaders are ready for advanced leadership programs.  This tier includes the Leadership Luncheon Series, the CMU Leadership Challenge, as well as a variety of workshops, trainings and retreats facilitated by the Leadership Resource Consultants.
