Scholarships for Continuing Students

Talent, athletic and departmental scholarships

Privately funded endowments provide supplemental funding to students based on need, academic focus, career aspirations or other criteria. Most of the endowed scholarships awarded by CMU departments are awarded to returning students with established, CMU grade point averages and/or signed majors. A limited number of CMU departments do, however, offer scholarships to new students; these scholarships are awarded based on departmental criteria. A Departmental Scholarship Listing is available. Students should check with the academic department regarding scholarship application procedures.

Talent scholarships are awarded to students participating in co-curricular activities in Music, Speech and Dramatic Arts and Broadcasting and Cinematic Arts; the Athletic Department awards athletic aid according to NCAA guidelines; and, the Military Science Department offers scholarships to students participating in ROTC. Students should contact the academic department for more information.

CMU Merit Scholarship renewal fall 2014 to spring 2019

CMU merit scholarship(s) recipients must meet the following criteria for renewal:

  1. A student must be enrolled and remain enrolled full-time (12 credits or more) each semester as a degree-seeking student. Waitlisted courses do not count toward official enrollment.
  2. Students must earn 30 new CMU credit hours each academic year (excluding the summer semester). I, Z, and E grades and CLEP, AP, IB and dual-enrolled credits do not count toward the 30 new CMU credit hours.
  3. Merit scholarships are renewable for three consecutive years (8 semesters total) or to the point where the student has completed degree requirements for their first bachelor's degree, whichever comes first. Undergraduate students who graduate in less than eight semesters forfeit their remaining scholarship eligibility.
  4. Students must reside on-campus during their freshman and sophomore years unless granted an exception.
  5. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 at CMU. Scholarship renewal will be reviewed on an annual basis at the end of each spring semester.
  6. If a student chooses to attend another college or university or withdraws from CMU, the scholarship is forfeited.
  7. If a student accepts a CMU scholarship that covers the full cost of attendance, the higher award takes the place of all other scholarships. Subsequently, if a student does not meet the renewal criteria for the scholarship that covers full cost, or decides not to continue with that scholarship program, they cannot "reclaim" the other scholarship.

CMU Merit Scholarship renewal fall 2019 to spring 2024

CMU merit scholarship(s) recipients are awarded their scholarships prior to enrollment. The Maroon and Gold Scholarship will be awarded at a percent based off the cost of 30 credits, not actual credit load. In order to renew to the following years, the following criteria must be met:

  1. A student must be enrolled and remain enrolled full-time (12 credits or more) each semester as a degree-seeking student. Waitlisted courses do not count toward official enrollment.
  2. Students must earn 30 new CMU credit hours each academic year. I, Z, and E grades as well as CLEP, AP, IB and dual-enrolled credits do not count toward the 30 new CMU credit hours.
  3. Students must reside on-campus freshman and sophomore years unless granted a housing exception.
  4. If a student's tuition level changes after fall term into the spring term, the scholarship amount will not update to the new cost. Scholarship awards are calculated prior to the start of each academic year based on the student's applicable tuition rate.
  5. Merit scholarships are renewable for three consecutive years (8 semesters total) or to the point where the student has completed degree requirements for their first bachelor's degree; whichever comes first. Undergraduate students who graduate in less than 8 semesters forfeit their remaining scholarship eligibility.
  6. Students must maintain a cumulative CMU GPA of 3.00 at the end of the second academic year. Scholarship renewal will be reviewed on an annual basis at the end of each spring semester.
  7. If a student chooses to attend another college or university or withdraws from CMU, the scholarship is forfeited.
  9. Students in their final year may appeal to receive their scholarship. Please note, if you are below full time status, your scholarship % renewal will be based on actual enrolled credits, not 30 credits.
