Authorization and art approval

All university departments and organizations must obtain authorization from University Communications for commercial use of the university’s name or marks.

Commercial use is defined as the manufacture and distribution of consumer products (e.g. clothing, hats, pens, souvenir items and other emblematic merchandise). University departments and student groups that order merchandise or products with the university’s name or other marks imprinted thereon, either for resale or giveaway, is considered commercial use. An item that bears the marks of the university and those of a commercial business, such as a restaurant, is also considered commercial use.

Please complete the Authorization for Use and Art Approval Form and submit it for approval of your project. All products bearing the university name or other marks must be purchased from a licensed manufacturer or distributor.

Note: If you are ordering imprinted merchandise through the CMU purchasing department, completion of the authorization form and approval from UComm is NOT required.

The proposed artwork or design to be placed on the product must be attached to the form for consideration. All designs or wording on the product must be submitted, not just the design that features the university name or marks (i.e. what appears on the front and back of shirts). Please have the licensed vendor submit a final design. Hand-lettered or drawn design proposals will not be accepted. Designs may be mailed, faxed, or submitted electronically by e-mail.
