Using Webmail (Outlook Web Access)

I am a faculty/staff member. How can I access my email from off-campus without using VPN?

The easiest way to view your email from off-campus is by using the Outlook Web Access. This can be accessed from https://mail.cmich.edu. When you go to that site, you will first have to login on CMU's Single Sign-On Gateway. After logging in, you will be taken to your webmail.

What can I do from Outlook Web Access?

Most people will find that they can do all of the things that they use Outlook for. You can send email, view/edit your calendar and appointments, and update your contacts, tasks, rules, etc. There are a few notable differences, however. For example, it is not possible to access shared inboxes without manually modifying the URL of the page. To open a shared inbox or calendar, or another user's inbox or calendar, follow the instructions below.

NOTE: You will be required to have permissions to the inbox or calendar in order to view it. These permissions must be set through Outlook; this cannot be done from Outlook Web Access.

What browsers are supported by Outlook Web Access?

Internet Explorer is the recommended browser for using Outlook Web Access. Other browsers, such as Firefox, are able to connect to the website with reduced functionality. For example, the Folders directory pane on the left will not display, and the reading pane will not display on the right.

To open a shared Exchange mailbox or calendar using OWA:

  1. Navigate to http://mail.cmich.edu and login with a Global ID and password that has permissions to the shared account.
  2. Place cursor to the right of the URL in the address bar after the mailbox loads.
  3. Enter the mailbox name after the address as shown, where globalid is the shared account or other user account you wish to access:
    • For access to e-mail: https://mail3.cmich.edu/exchange/globalid/
    • For access to calendar: https://mail3.cmich.edu/exchange/globalid/calendar
  4. Press ENTER and the shared mailbox or calendar will display.
