Apply NowTypes of Study Abroad Programs
You may choose from several different types of study and internship abroad programs to help broaden your academic experience:
- Study programs at partner institutions
- Short-term programs led by CMU faculty
- International internships
Your Study Abroad Advisor will help you find the program best suited to your academic and personal needs.
Study programs at partner institutions
Through one of our partner universities or program providers, enroll at an institution abroad for anywhere from 2-10 weeks in the summer up to a semester or full academic year.
Exchange partners
CMU has special agreements with certain universities to exchange students for a semester or academic year. When you choose one of our student exchange programs, you will pay CMU tuition which makes these some of our most affordable study programs. Ask your Study Abroad Advisor about exchanges available in your area of study.
Short-term programs led by CMU faculty
Enroll in a short-term program led by a CMU faculty member and go abroad with a group of CMU students. Programs typically range from 1-8 weeks and travel during the summer term or over spring break.
Examples of previous faculty-led study abroad programs include:
- Hospitality, sustainability, and ecotourism in Costa Rica.
- Business culture and communication in England and Wales.
- Fashion in Paris.
- History in Scotland, Germany, and France.
- Art, design, and architecture in Italy.
- Immersive classroom teaching experience in Ireland.
- Global citizenship in Morocco, Spain, Germany, New Zealand, and beyond.
International internships
The Office of Study Abroad works with organizations that will place you in an international internship. All internships are for academic credit and housing is included in the program fee. Internships are typically offered as stand-alone summer programs but can be paired with semester study abroad in some cases.
You will work closely with your Study Abroad Advisor to select the site and with a faculty advisor to obtain course credit approval. For more information about the internship process, meet with a Study Abroad Advisor.
