Hone your research skills and build your knowledge base in biochemistry, analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, polymer, and materials chemistry. Our 2-year degree program will help you advance your career or prepare you for doctoral or professional programs. Additionally, our new accelerated BS/MS program allows CMU undergraduates, who are majoring in chemistry or biochemistry, to double count certain senior advanced chemistry courses towards MS coursework and graduate with the MS degree in as little as one extra year.
Program Snapshot
Why This Program & What You'll Learn
Our research-driven program spans all major chemical disciplines — analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry.
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to apply your classroom and laboratory knowledge. You'll work closely with faculty in world-class facilities. You'll assist them on research topics ranging from clean energy and renewable materials to understanding and combatting cancer and infectious diseases.
Our program develops students into professional scientists with the expertise to conduct advanced research and thrive in chemistry-related professions. You'll also be prepared to pursue your PhD in chemistry.
Program Highlights
As a Chemistry student in our graduate program, you’ll:
- Participate in lab-intensive chemistry research with faculty members on projects supported by grants such as the development of new, effective, nontoxic, environmentally-friendly flame retardants from renewable biosources, and identifying and characterizing particular proteins that are important to Tuberculosis causing bacteria.
- Have your choice of research areas to delve into — from organic chemistry to materials and nanoscience to analytics chemistry and more.
