Student facilitation and internships at the Institute for Transformative Dialogue

Student facilitation

Students pursuing the Intergroup Relations and Justice minor can gain valuable experience as peer dialogue facilitators, leading meaningful conversations that promote inclusive dialogue across campus. Facilitators collaborate with faculty to co-create engaging learning environments in courses such as IGR 145 (Racism and Racial Justice through Dialogue) and IGR/WGS 245 (Gender Identities in Dialogue). This role helps students develop transferable skills in dialogic communication, conflict resolution, and inclusive leadership.

To qualify, students must first earn a recommendation in IGR 145 or WGS 245 to participate in the facilitator training course, IGR 355. Upon completing IGR 355, students participate in a first-semester internship as a facilitator, gaining practical experience. In their second semester, they continue in the role and receive compensation for their work.

Student internships

In addition to serving as dialogue facilitators, students can explore significant leadership positions in areas such as facilitator mentoring, training and development, and publicity and community outreach. These internships offer hands-on experience and help students build practical skills in communication, leadership, conflict resolution, and collaborative action.

Positions in facilitator mentoring and training and development require students to complete the facilitator training course, IGR 355. There are no prerequisites for the publicity and community outreach internship, which opens the door for broader participation.
