The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions offers a variety of scholarships based on need, academic merit, majors, and other criteria. Provided through the generosity of our alumni, friends, faculty, and staff, each scholarship enhances students’ academic experiences and is a testament to the strength of our programs.
College of Health Professions scholarships
Chuck Curtiss Beauty in Life Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2019 by Linda Curtiss, family, and friends in memory of Chuck Curtiss, class of 1981.
Eligibility:
Dr. Nazem Haidar Memorial Fund
This scholarship was established in 2015 by Dr. Salma Haidar in memory of her father, Dr. Nazem Haidar.
Eligibility:
- CMU sophomore, junior, or senior.
- Signed major in public health education or environmental health and safety in The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions.
- Minimum GPA of 3.5.
Health Professions Dean's Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2014 by alumni and friends of The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions.
Eligibility:
Masterson-Teik Family Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2022 by Dr. Thomas J. Masterson, Jr. and Mrs. Nancy C. Masterson in memory of their parents.
Eligibility:
- CMU junior or senior undergraduate student.
- Minimum GPA of 3.5.
- Enrolled in a clinical program within The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions.
- Preference given to first-generation students.
The Louise A. Williams and Jane McNamara Endowed Award
This award was established in 2003 by Louise A. Williams and Jane McNamara.

Athletic Training scholarships
Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Jayne Keating Athletic Training Education Program Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2007 by Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Jayne Keating.
Eligibility:
- Student admitted into the MSAT program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Preference given to students that demonstrate leadership skills, outstanding accomplishments, and co-curricular activities.
Reed Phillips Athletic Training Award
This award was established in 2015 by Nick and Toni Phillips and friends in honor of Reed Phillips, a 2012 alumnus of the athletic training program.
Eligibility:
- CMU student in the athletic training program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.25.
- Preference given to students who demonstrate a passion for sports, athletic training, and those who show compassion towards people.
Ron Sendre Athletic Training Education Award
This award was established in 2013 by Ron and Beth Sendre and friends.
Eligibility:
- CMU student admitted into the MSAT program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.3.
- Demonstrate leadership within the MSAT program with special consideration to those who are also active members within the community at large.
- Preference given to first generation college students.
Shingles Family Leadership Athletic Training Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2017 by Dr. Rene and Mr. Stan Shingles to assist students in the athletic training program. Dr. Rene Revis Shingles is an award-winning educator, author, and speaker. She worked at CMU for over 30 years as a professor in the athletic training program, including 15 years as program director. In 2018, she became the first African American woman inducted into the National Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame.

- CMU student admitted into the MSAT program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Demonstrate leadership experience.
Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders scholarships
CDO-SLP Alumni Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1998 as a result of contributions received from CMU alumni responding to CMU phonathons.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student in their second year of speech-language pathology program.
Doctor Of Audiology Alumni Annual Award
This award was established in 2017 by CMU audiology alumni, faculty, and staff to support students enrolled in the audiology program.
Eligibility:
- Student enrolled in the audiology program.
- Demonstrate outstanding academic performance at the end of the first year of enrollment.
Jacobs Family Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2017 by Dr. Karen and Michael Jacobs.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student in their third year of the audiology program.
- Have an interest in private practice audiology.
J.Dean and Betty L. Eckersley Audiology Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1996 by J. Dean and Betty L. Eckersley.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student in the audiology program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.5.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- First preference will be given to students from Isabella County.
- Second preference will be given to students from Michigan.
Keith L. Maxwell Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1984 by an estate gift of Ellen Mercer Clark Maxwell in memory of her husband, Dr. Keith L. Maxwell, who was a speech-language pathology professor.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student in the speech-language pathology program.
- Enrolled as a full-time student.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
Les Gruber Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1985 by Mrs. Jacoba Gruber, family, and friends in memory of her husband Dr. Les Gruber. Dr. Gruber was a professor in the Department of Communication Disorders at CMU.
Eligibility:
- Signed major in communication disorders.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Completed at least 18 credits of coursework in communication disorders.
- Demonstrate strong clinical skills.
- First preference given to undergraduate students.
Margaret E. Sanford Marquardt Memorial Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2007 by Richard G. Marquardt in memory of Margaret E. Sanford Marquardt.
Eligibility:
- Students with physical disabilities that are registered with the Student Disability Services Office.
- First preference given to graduate students in communication disorders with a minimum GPA of 3.5.
- Second preference given to undergraduate students who are juniors or seniors majoring in communication disorders with a minimum GPA of 3.25.
Mike and Beth Tierney Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2007 by Mike and Beth Tierney and is awarded to communication disorder majors on odd years and College of Business majors on even years.
Eligibility:
- CMU undergraduate student from Southeast Michigan.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Demonstrate involvement in leadership activities.
Nicholas P. Redfield Memorial Endowment
This scholarship was established in 1998 in memory of Nicholas P. Redfield.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student in the audiology program.
- Demonstrate a "client centered" approach to clinical audiology, academic performance, clinical performance, volunteer work, and efforts to better the audiology program.
Rebecca Rees Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was created to honor Rebecca "Becky" Rees, a beloved American Sign Language (ASL) professor within the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions for ten years. Becky was a driving force behind ASL studies and Deaf Awareness Events.
Eligibility:
- Communication science disorders major with a minor in American Sign Language.
The Claudia E. Marchildon Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 2022 by Mr. David H. Bingham in memory of his dear friend and CMU alumna, Miss Claudia E. Marchildon '79. Claudia was an accomplished and respected member of the speech language pathology community and active in the profession at the state and national level.
Eligibility:
- CMU undergraduate student.
- Communication science disorders major.
- Preference given to students that demonstrate financial need.
The Evelyn Hill Pender Memorial Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2002 by Mr. Paul Pender in memory of his wife, Evelyn Hill Pender, a CMU alumnus who was a speech-language pathologist for 32 years in Michigan.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student in the speech-language pathology program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.5.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Enrolled as a full-time student.
- Record of academic and clinical excellence.
Department of Physical Education and Sport scholarships
Bob Currie Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1974 as a loan fund and converted to an endowment in 1988 in memory of Dr. Bob Currie.
Eligibility:
- CMU undergraduate student.
- Signed major in physical education.
- Preference given to students from Dearborn, Michigan.
CMU Sport Management Graduate Award
This annual award was established by friends of the College of Health Professions Department of Physical Education and Sport to honor a student pursuing a graduate degree in sports management.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student in the sports management program.
Dan and Bobbie Rose Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1995 by Dan and Bobbie Rose.
Eligibility:
- CMU undergraduate student.
- Signed major in physical education.
Grace L. Ryan Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1992 to support students majoring in physical education.
Eligibility:
- CMU undergraduate student.
- Signed major in physical education.
James E. Hornak Endowed Award
This award was established in 2009 by multiple donors in honor of Dr. James E. Hornak.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student.
- Enrolled in a graduate program in the Department of Physical Education and Sport.
- Minimum GPA of 3.3.
Jane McNamara Physical Education Award
This award was established in 2008 by Jane McNamara to support students in the Department of Physical Education and Sport.
Eligibility:
- CMU undergraduate student.
- Enrolled in a program in the Department of Physical Education and Sport.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
Louise A. Williams Award
This award was established in 2009 by the estate of Louise A. Williams and is awarded on a rotating basis to a student in the physical education program, dance program, or athletics.
Eligibility:
- CMU undergraduate student majoring in physical education.
Mary Eddy Gover Award for Scholastic Excellence
This award was established in 2017 by Mr. David Gover to support a senior student in their final year of study within the Department of Physical Education.
Eligibility:
- CMU senior student.
- Signed major in physical education.
- Recipient will have achieved the highest GPA among all applicants in non-physical education courses.
- Recipient must have completed their entire undergraduate degree at CMU; transfer students are not eligible.
Ronald W. and Bernice F. Finch Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1995 by Mr. and Mrs. Ronald W. Finch.
Eligibility:
- CMU senior student.
- Signed major or minor in physical education.
- Completion of at least 85 credits.
Sport Management Endowed Award
This award was established in 2013 by Dr. Vincent Mumford and others to support an undergraduate student pursuing a major or minor in sport management.
Eligibility:
- CMU undergraduate student.
- Signed major or minor in sport management.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
The LaMott Smith Endowed Student Award
This award was established in 2019 by friends and family of LaMott Smith. LaMott was a student at CMU when he passed away from bacterial meningitis.
Eligibility:
- CMU undergraduate student.
- Signed major in the Department of Physical Education and Sport.
- Minimum GPA of 2.7.
- Preference given to students with experience working in sports and recreation fields.
Wallace C. Parker Scholarship
This scholarship was established originally as a Loan Fund in 1963 then converted to an endowment in 1995.
Eligibility:
- CMU junior or senior student.
- Enrolled in a program in the Department of Physical Education and Sport.
Nutrition and Dietetics scholarships
Marjorie E. Harris Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2015 by Dr. Samuel W. Harris in memory of his wife Marjorie E. Harris, class of 1957.
Eligibility:
- CMU junior or senior student.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Enrolled in the dietetics program.
Rose J. Hogue Honorary Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1985 in honor of Rose J. Hogue who served as Professor in home economics at Central Michigan University from 1919 to 1953.
Eligibility:
- CMU junior or senior student.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Enrolled in the dietetics program.
School of Health Sciences scholarships
Edward C. Brown Memorial Award
This award was established in 1991 by CMU faculty, staff, students, and friends in memory of Edward C. Brown, director of CMU Health Services from 1978 to 1990, in recognition of the outstanding leadership he provided to health services, the division, and CMU in general.
Eligibility:
- CMU sophomore, junior, or senior student.
- Signed major or minor in health education.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
Health Administration Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2021 by a donor who spent their career working for nonprofit agencies focusing on public health and social services.
Eligibility:
- CMU junior or senior student.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Signed major in health administration.
- Preference given to students focusing on public health and social services for nonprofit agencies.
- Preference given to residents of Cheboygan, Emmet, or Mackinaw counties, Michigan. If no students, from those counties are eligible, then students from other Michigan rural communities can be considered.
Mary Lou Bruce Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1983 by Lieutenant Colonel Gene D. Bruce and friends in memory of Mary Lou Bruce, who was a dedicated military wife and a valued member of the military science and health education families and the Mount Pleasant community.
Eligibility:
- CMU junior, senior, or graduate student.
- Signed major in health education or health science.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Preference given to students enrolled in the ROTC program at CMU.
Minelli Family Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2005 by Dr. Ernest L. Minelli and Dr. Mark Minelli, 1975 alumnus, to support students in the School of Health Sciences.
- CMU undergraduate student.
- Signed major or minor in the School of Health Sciences.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Preference given to students studying in any of the public health fields.
O'Boyle Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2007 by Dr. Jodi Brookins-Fisher, 1989 alumnus, and Dr. Irene O'Boyle, 1988 and 1991 alumnus, both professors in the School of Health Sciences in The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions.
Eligibility:
- CMU junior or senior student.
- Signed major in public health education or school health education.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
The S.W. Barrows Scholarship
This scholarship was established by S. W. Barrows in 2018 to support a student in the School of Health Sciences.
Eligibility:
- CMU sophomore, junior, or senior.
- Signed major within the School of Health Sciences.
- Minimum GPA of 2.8.
- Michigan resident.
- Demonstrate financial need.
Physician Assistant scholarships
Ahmad Hakemi Scholarship for Physician Assistant Students
This scholarship was established in 2013 by Robert Wintermyer, 2005 alumnus, and friends, to honor Dr. Ahmad Hakemi, for his hard work and commitment to physician assistants at CMU and nationwide.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student in the physician assistant program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.4.
- Demonstrate financial need.
David R. Gamez Award for Physician Assistant Students
This award was established to support a student in the physician assistant program who has demonstrated a commitment to promoting diversity in the physician assistant profession.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student in the physician assistant program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.5.
Richard and Colleen Burns Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2013 by Richard, 1960 alumnus, and Colleen Burns, to honor Julia Egan Burns, 1902 alumnus.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student in the physician assistant program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Preference given to students with financial need from one of the following mid-Michigan area schools: St. Johns, DeWitt, Westphalia, Fowler, Pewamo, Hubbardston, Carson City, Perrinton, Ashley, or Ovid-Elsie.
Robert L. Wintermyer Endowed Scholarship for Physician Assistant Students
This scholarship was established in 2011 by Robert Wintermyer, 2005 alumnus, and CMU faculty, to honor physician assistant students.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student in the second year of the physician assistant program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.4.
- Preference given to students that demonstrate financial need.
Ron L. Nelson Memorial Award
This award was established in 2012 by Brenda Nelson, in memory of Ron L. Nelson, a former physician assistant faculty at CMU.
Eligibility:
- CMU graduate student in the first year of the physician assistant program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.5.
- Preference given to students from a rural or underserved area, demonstrating previous community involvement and leadership skills, along with proven financial need.
Saltarelli Family Physician Assistant Fund
This scholarship was established in 2023 by Dr. William Saltarelli and Diane Saltarelli, 1992 alumnus, to honor their daughter Katelyn Saltarelli Hedrich, PA-C, 2007 and 2009 alumnus, a local physical assistant working with pediatric patients in the Mt. Pleasant community. Dr. William Saltarelli was a professor in the College of Health Professions at CMU for over 32 years and educational instructor for a total of 46 years. He dedicated his scholarly pursuits to both cardiovascular disease prevention in children as well as implementing novel teaching methods in human anatomy. Since the inception of CMU's PA program many students have benefited from his advising, mentorship, and knowledge of clinical human anatomy. This non-renewable scholarship will support CMU physician assistant students preparing for clinical rotations for expenses incurred while participating in assigned clinical clerkship rotations.
