Fired Up All Night celebrates the silver screen

The Central Michigan International Film Festival is teaming up with the Division of Student Affairs to host an unforgettable Fired Up All Night (FUAN) event Friday night.

Dubbed “Lights, Camera, Fire Up!,” the event promises more than just late-night snacks and music. It’s a unique change to experience CMU’s creative side through student-made films, a silent disco and a relaxing, come-and-go atmosphere.

Christian Dunn, festival director and president of the film festival, said the film-based event should be “one of the calmer Fired Up All Nights.”

“It’s a little less structured so people can just relax, do what they want in the (Student Activity Center) and leave whenever they want,” he said.

The format was intended to create a safe space that’s inclusive, stress-free and centered around student engagement.

At the heart of the night are student films – short, expressive and crafted by Chippewas.

“we’re open to everyone,” Dunn emphasized. “Anyone can submit a film. We really try our best to highlight independent work, especially from students.”

Each year, planning for the film festival begins in June, and submissions are accepted until December, with most students receiving fee waivers. Selections are typically finalized by mid-January and, yes, almost all student films are accepted.

Of course, with a public event like the festival, content matters.

Dunn said while there isn’t a rigid screening process, every film is reviewed during the months leading up to the festival to ensure they align with the university standards.

“We review them from June until about the middle of January,” he explained. Filmmakers are encouraged to reach out with questions or special requests during the process.

Beyond the movies, music and giveaways, the Fired Up All Night event serves a bigger purpose – offering a safe, alcohol-free late-night space for students to connect and unwind.

“Success for us is creating an enjoyable, stress-free environment where students can relax and appreciate student-driven creativity,” Dunn said.

At heart, it’s all about making meaningful memories, celebrating the arts, and reminding students that their work and stories matter.

“Lights, Camera, Fire Up!” is scheduled for 10 p.m. Friday, April 11, to 2 a.m. Saturday, April 12, in the Student Activity Center. RSVP through Engage Central.
