National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education designation opens doors
Scholarship available to NCAE university students unlocks a future in cybersecurity
Students pursuing cybersecurity at Central Michigan University have a unique opportunity to advance their education through the Department of Defense Cyber Service Academy Scholarship. This competitive program provides full scholarships, mentorship and guaranteed employment opportunities, reflecting the DoD's commitment to strengthening the nation's cybersecurity workforce.
A leader in cybersecurity education
CMU is proud to be designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education, a distinction awarded by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. This recognition highlights CMU’s commitment to equipping students with the knowledge and skills to combat ever-evolving cyber threats.
Through advanced coursework and experiential learning opportunities, CMU’s cybersecurity programs prepare students to excel in areas such as system security engineering, threat and vulnerability assessment, and critical information infrastructure assurance. With expert faculty and access to advanced resources, students are well-positioned to thrive in this high-demand field.
"CMU’s cybersecurity program offers many highlights,” said business information systems faculty member Susan Helser. “The program emphasizes both technical and business aspects of cybersecurity, with research opportunities, including large data sets, and related areas like computer science available on campus.”
“Beyond academics, the Cybersecurity Club provides valuable networking and learning experiences through guest speakers, competitions, field trips and community outreach. While not required, internships and co-ops are highly recommended, and faculty actively share opportunities through platforms like Handshake and industry contacts."
About the Cyber Service Academy Scholarship
The DoD Cyber Service Academy Scholarship is a comprehensive program aimed at addressing the nation’s critical need for skilled cybersecurity professionals. Administered by the NSA, the scholarship covers full tuition, required fees, books, a computer, travel support to a cyber-related conference and a generous stipend—$29,000 for undergraduates and $34,000 for graduate students.
Recipients also gain access to hands-on internships with DoD agencies, fostering practical experience and networking opportunities. In return, scholars commit to working for the DoD after graduation for one year per year of scholarship support received.
“Cybersecurity is a dynamic and evolving field, and if you're passionate about learning, it’s a great fit,” said Josh Marzic, CMU alum, certified information systems security professional and IT security administrator at INX. “Success in the field requires genuine passion. CMU provides the tools and environment for growth, but dedication is key. Gaining experience through programs like the DoD scholarship is invaluable for building a strong career.”
Why apply?
Cybersecurity is critical to national defense, with technology reliance and cyber threats growing daily. The DoD Cyber Service Academy Scholarship not only funds a student’s education but provides a direct pathway to a career safeguarding critical infrastructure and defending against cyberattacks.
Applications are open to CMU students with U.S. citizenship pursuing cybersecurity degrees, but there is flexibility for students beyond the College of Business to apply.
“Students don’t need to focus solely on cybersecurity to qualify. The DoD supports a variety of fields, allowing students from other CMU colleges, such as the College of Science and Engineering, to apply,” said Helser.
Apply for the scholarship on the Department of Defense Cyber Service Academy Scholarship website. Applications are due by February 1, 2025. To learn more about CMU’s cybersecurity program, reach out to Susan Helser at helse1a@cmich.edu.
