New Toastmasters chapter offers students a path to stronger communication and leadership skills
Globally recognized organization creates a supportive space for students to build confidence
Public speaking and leadership aren’t just skills—they’re career-defining advantages. Mastering these abilities is essential for success in today’s competitive job market. Soon, Central Michigan University students will have the opportunity to build these critical skills through CMU’s new Toastmasters International chapter. This globally recognized organization helps individuals become confident speakers, strong communicators, and effective leaders.
Why Toastmasters? Why now?
Strong communication and leadership skills are essential in today’s competitive job market, yet many students struggle with public speaking and professional presence. Toastmasters provides a structured, low-cost way for students to build confidence, refine their speaking skills, and develop leadership abilities in a supportive environment.
“Recognizing the importance of strong communication and leadership skills in the business world, we saw an opportunity to bring Toastmasters to campus and create a dedicated space for students to develop these critical abilities,” said associate dean of the College of Business Administration and longtime Toastmasters proponent Sanjay Kumar. “Through this club, students can enhance their public speaking, presentation, and leadership skills—empowering them to excel in their careers and confidently navigate professional environments.”
For Judith Saungweme, an MBA graduate student from Harare, Zimbabwe who is leading the effort to bring the club to campus, Toastmasters is about more than just public speaking—it’s about unlocking potential. “Leadership and communication go hand in hand, and I’ve seen firsthand how Toastmasters transforms people,” she said. “It’s not just about speaking in front of a crowd—it’s about learning how to articulate your thoughts, build confidence, and engage with others in a meaningful way. I can’t wait for CMU students to experience this.”
Toastmasters follows a learn-by-doing approach, where members deliver prepared speeches, practice impromptu speaking, and take on leadership roles—all while receiving constructive feedback from peers. Participants gain valuable experience in storytelling, persuasive communication, and professional presence, giving them an edge in interviews, networking, and career advancement.
A community effort: alumni and faculty support
Bringing Toastmasters to CMU has been a team effort, spearheaded by Saungweme with support from chapter advisor and faculty member Ehimen-Ebitibituwa Ekhomen, associate dean Kumar, and MBA director Aparna Lhila. To make the club more accessible, the CBA will cover part of the initial membership fees for the first 20 registrants, ensuring that finances aren’t a barrier to participation.
CMU alumni Lisa Waalkes, ’82, and Bruce Racalla, ’87, are serving as chapter sponsors, guiding the group and sharing their professional experiences.
Ready to elevate your communication and leadership skills?
The club’s first meeting will be held on March 5 from 4 to 6 p.m. in Grawn 150G, and all students—regardless of major—are invited to attend. Students will see a live Toastmasters demonstration, meet club sponsors and faculty supporters, and learn how to get involved. There’s no obligation to join—just come see if it’s right for you!
