      Animating around the clock

Central Michigan University animation students compete in an international 24-hour animation competition.

Five Central Michigan University animation students sat down in Wightman Hall 224 on Oct. 4 and left 24 hours later with a completed 30-second animated movie.

Led by art and design faculty member Chad Bierdeman, the team which called itself Hive 224, Baby, worked together to complete a 2D animation titled “Spooky Siblings” for the international 24-hour Animation Contest for Students.

Animation students Clarissa Martin, Sam Gauthier, Ben Geer, Isabelle Fabella and Vanesa Skocelas-Johnson competed against 291 teams from 65 schools in nine countries. In total, more than 1,400 students from around the world submitted entries based on the contest theme of “What does family mean to you?”

“Some of the schools we competed against are the top-tier art schools in the country,” Bierdeman said.

While CMU did not end up placing in the top 5, Bierdeman said it was still an awesome opportunity for both the students and the university.

“I really believe in what we have and what we are building. The opportunity to put CMU out in the public eye is awesome.”
