CMU College of Medicine resident physicians gear up for SIMWars competition

      by Alexandria Rene

Emergency medicine residents from Central Michigan University's College of Medicine and across Michigan will put their expertise to the test during this year’s Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association of Michigan (EMRAM) SIMWars, an annual competition involving high-pressure medical simulation scenarios.

The 13th annual SIMWars competition, sponsored by EMRAM and the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians, will be hosted by CMU on April 10 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the college’s education building located on 1632 Stone Street.

A total of 10 teams from residency programs across Michigan will be tested on their skill and abilities for the chance to win the title.

The CMU Simulation team along with Drs. Jon Deibel, Andrew Bazakis, and Belinda Kakos, as well as various members of the emergency medicine faculty from CMU, developed various life-threatening scenarios for residents to collaborate in teams.

“We understand by creating these artificial situations that mimic real-life medical encounters truly helps resident physicians to hone their skills, provide the best possible care, and diminish the possibility of medical errors in the future,” said Dr. Andrew Bazakis, Co-Director of Emergency Medicine Simulation.

Each team will perform five different cases and all teams will be judged for all rotations with the top two teams moving to the finals. An expert panel will judge each team’s performance in the areas of diagnostics, therapeutics, communication, leadership, stress management, and overall patient care.
