CMU launches fast-track biology master’s program for Fall 2025

      by Robert Wang

Central Michigan University (CMU) has just rolled out an exciting new option for Biology undergraduates: an Accelerated Master’s of Science (MS) in Biology. This unique, fast-track program lets students earn their master’s degree in just one additional year, offering a convenient, one-year add-on to their undergraduate studies. Open to CMU students majoring in Biology or related fields, the program offers two paths: a research-focused Plan A (Thesis) and a course-based Plan B, so students can choose the option that best fits their goals.

This new program gives students the chance to combine advanced research and coursework into their undergrad years, allowing up to half of the credits required for a master's degree to be completed ahead of time. That means students can launch into career paths in conservation, environmental science, healthcare, or even head toward a PhD if they want to keep going in research.

Usually, earning an MS in Biology would take two years after finishing a bachelor’s degree, but CMU’s accelerated program cuts that down to one. Students work with a faculty advisor from the Biology Department, engaging in research projects that deepen their learning and prepare them for real-world experiences. Graduate assistantships and tuition waivers are also available for students in the research-focused (Plan A) track, helping to make the program both faster and more affordable.

Sophomores and Juniors are eligible to apply. Any student in their freshman, sophomore, or junior year looking to add a research experience should talk to a Biology faculty advisor to learn how they can tailor the program to fit their goals.

For those interested, CMU’s Biology Department is ready to answer questions and help students take advantage of this unique new pathway to a master’s degree.
