America’s Thanksgiving Parade® presented by Gardner White is a beloved tradition for families in Michigan, and it is preparing for its 98th year winding through the Motor City. It also is an annual tradition for millions of families who watch on television nationwide every Thanksgiving morning.
Central Michigan University is joining the fun for its fourth year participating in the parade. Once again, CMU is inviting students, faculty, staff and alumni to apply to be part of the exciting day by registering to serve as marchers in the parade. Those marching will proudly wear maroon and gold and walk alongside CMU’s float.
"If you're passionate about our university and ready to show your maroon and gold pride, join us this Thanksgiving and help us celebrate our CMU spirit in style," said Hannah Martin, CMU’s assistant director of Alumni Engagement.
Martin said marchers must be at least 16 years old and able to walk the 3 mile parade route. There also is a considerable amount of standing involved. Marchers can bring a friend or family member along by registering them on their application form. Both the marcher and guest must commit to participating in the entire parade.
All applications will be reviewed by a parade committee consisting of students, faculty and staff representatives along with the Alumni Board, Martin said. The deadline to apply to march in the parade is Wednesday, October 9.
For those who would rather watch the parade from the grandstand, CMU Alumni Relations is offering the chance to register for seating and enjoy a Thanksgiving breakfast. Registration includes exclusive grandstand parade seating on Woodward Avenue with alumni and friends, an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet and access to the CMU Detroit Office with private restrooms.

CMU designed an all-new float for its fourth America’s Thanksgiving Parade®. The three sections of the float feature CMU students enjoying campus life, competing in athletic events and learning through a variety of experiences.
CMU Director of Visual Media Amy White collaborated on designing the new float. She said it will reflect all aspects of CMU’s “We Do” brand. “We wanted to showcase the many opportunities for hands-on experience that CMU students have,” White said. “From student organizations and academic programs to athletics, America will see how CMU is focused on real world results for students.”
America’s Thanksgiving Parade® is the second largest in the nation. It has garnered many accolades over the years, including being named Best Holiday Parade by USA Today three times in the last six years.
CMU alumnus Tony Michaels, president and CEO of The Parade Company, said he is proud to see his alma mater once again featured on a national stage.
"Taking part in the parade brings national attention to CMU – highlighting students, faculty, staff, alumni and CMU's dedication to Detroit and Michigan," Michaels said. "We are thrilled to showcase CMU to prospective students and their families nationwide and show them the Fired Up spirit."
