Mathematics Assistance Center offers key support for CMU students

The Mathematics Assistance Center at Central Michigan University is a resource for students seeking help in mathematics or statistics across various disciplines. Serving students from a range of math backgrounds, the MAC primarily assists those enrolled in 100- or 200-level math and introductory statistics courses. However, support is also available for students in more advanced classes, as well as those tackling math within subjects such as science, business, and even fashion merchandising, where mathematical skills like calculating fabric areas and costs are essential.

What sets the MAC apart is its convenient, walk-in tutoring service—no appointments necessary. Students are welcome to drop by whenever they need help with assignments, notes, or review for upcoming quizzes and exams. While most students visit to get assistance with homework, others come for clarification on class notes or on material from missed lessons. For those without access to a laptop or with a dead battery, both MAC locations provide computers for online homework, ensuring that all students have the resources they need to succeed.

The MAC operates at two locations on campus: Park Library (Room 370), open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Troutman Hall (Room 002), open Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Both locations cover foundational math courses, ranging from elementary algebra (MTH 101) to calculus 1 (MTH 132), with the library location focusing more on advanced mathematics and statistics tutoring. Additionally, a statistics expert is available Sunday evenings at Troutman Hall, which is the only location open at that time.

For students not on campus, such as those studying remotely or commuting from outside Mount Pleasant, the MAC offers online tutoring via WebEx. This option has proven invaluable for students working from various locations, including Japan, Korea, Georgia, and across Michigan.

The tutoring team at the MAC is diverse, with graduate assistants from the mathematics and statistics departments and undergraduate tutors from a wide range of majors, including mathematics, education, statistics, actuarial science, data science, physics, chemistry, engineering, economics, philosophy, and psychology. The only requirement is a strong math background, with at least calculus 2, and demonstrated academic success. Students interested in becoming tutors are encouraged to check the MAC website for more information.
