A Central Michigan University meteorology major has won $10,000 in the inaugural American Meteorological Society’s Women in Science Scholarship.
Olivia VanBuskirk, from Port Huron, Michigan, was awarded the scholarship for her senior year in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. The award — based on her academic achievements, references and an essay — includes lodging and registration at the society's 100th annual meeting in January 2020. It is funded by a group of female scientists to support the next generation of women in science.
VanBuskirk will spend this summer conducting research with faculty at the University of Michigan as part of the National Science Foundation-sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates program.
Upon graduating from CMU, VanBuskirk plans to pursue a doctorate and work to improve society's ability to use weather forecasts to protect life and property.
