There’s a new student organization on campus, and it’s taking CMU students to new heights—literally. The Drone Aviation, Research, and Engineering (D.A.R.E) student organization is dedicated to all things drones, bringing together students who are passionate about aerial technology, innovation, and hands-on learning.
So, what exactly does D.A.R.E do? A little bit of everything in the drone world! The group organizes drone flying sessions, tech workshops, and hands-on DIY drone projects for applications like aerial photography, mapping, and even drone racing. But it’s not just about flying—D.A.R.E members also attend industry conferences, stay up-to-date on FAA regulations, and connect with professionals in the field. Recently, members have even visited drone light show companies to learn more about the technology behind these stunning performances. And speaking of drone shows, students are especially excited about CMU’s upcoming fleet for drone light displays.
The goal of the organization is simple: to foster a community where students can exchange ideas, gain technical experience, and push the boundaries of drone technology. Whether students are seasoned drone pilots or just getting started, D.A.R.E provides a supportive environment for learning and innovation.
And the benefits go beyond just flying drones. Members develop hands-on technical skills, teamwork, leadership, and project management experience—valuable assets for anyone looking to enter the drone, aviation, or tech industries. Networking opportunities, potential sponsorships, and even internship possibilities make this an exciting extracurricular option for students looking to turn their passion into a career.
For prospective students, D.A.R.E offers a unique opportunity to dive into drone technology and be part of a growing field. It’s not just about having fun (though there’s plenty of that!); it’s about building real-world skills and shaping the future of aerial systems.
So, if you’ve ever been curious about drones—or just want to see what they can do—D.A.R.E is the place to be. Ready for takeoff? Contact the School of Engineering and Technology to learn more.
