Keith Dodson, the new Director of Orchestral Studies and Assistant Professor of Conducting at CMU, joined the CMU School of Music this fall after earning his Ph.D. in Music Education and Orchestral Conducting at Florida State University and teaching at Bethany College in Kansas for the past four years. For his work conducting the FSU University Symphony he was a finalist for the 2021 American Prize in Conducting. Two years later he was a finalist in the American Prize in Conducting for his work with the Chamber Orchestra of the Smoky Valley in Kansas, a role he still holds.
Dodson is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of musicians and educators in the orchestra field. His vision exceeds simply teaching music; he aims to shape future educators who will inspire and educate others at all levels. His research focuses on refining conducting techniques in collaboration with public school teachers to enhance students' musical abilities.
In his courses at CMU, Dodson is providing opportunities for personal and professional growth, by creating a space where students feel comfortable pushing past their limits. His approach to teaching is similar to a coach’s mindset, presenting assignments that challenge students to think beyond basic learning skills. Whether Dodson’s students decide to go on to teach, collaborate with other musicians, or participate in ensembles, his mission as a professor at CMU is to leave a meaningful impact on students planning to pursue a future in music.
