Savoring heritage, one dish at a time

      by Kathleen Hodgkins

Mount Pleasant, MI – January 30, 2025 – In honor of Jewish Heritage Week, students at Central Michigan University gathered in the Allen Foundation Culinary Nutrition Center to prepare and enjoy a traditional Israeli dish, Shakshuka. Sponsored by the student organization Hillel at CMU, the event brought together students for a hands-on cooking experience that blended culture, history, and nutrition.

Guided by culinary experts, participants learned the art of making Shakshuka, a dish featuring poached eggs in a spiced tomato and pepper sauce. The event fostered community engagement while highlighting the importance of cultural appreciation through food.

"Food has always been a powerful way to connect people, and this event provided a wonderful opportunity for students to explore Jewish culinary traditions while learning valuable cooking skills," said Dr. Jeff Fisher.
