​​Professional organizations recognizing CMU meteorology students

The American Meteorological Society and National Weather Association are paying attention to CMU's meteorology major and the work of its dedicated students. Throughout the 2011-2012 academic year, both respected professional organizations have repeatedly honored CMU students with top honors and awards; the most recent recognition was in January 2012 at the AMS national conference in New Orleans.

Adam Picard took first place out of 150 entries in the event's undergraduate and graduate research poster competition. His poster, "Evaluation of the Mesoscale Convective Vortex and Heavy Flooding of August 11-12, 2010" evaluated the weather conditions that led to the damaging deluge that flooded the basement of CMU's Brooks Hall.

Picard says his success is a testament to the quality of CMU's meteorology major and its faculty within the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

"It's been a wonderful experience," says Picard, a senior from Richland, Mich. whose research was developed as his Honors Program project. "The professors here are always available to help you, and you can't get that anywhere."

CMU offers the only meteorology major in Michigan and is leading the way in a rapidly expanding profession. The U.S. Department of Labor projects a 15 percent increase in the atmospheric and space science professions by the year 2018.​
