What are the requirements to qualify to take the Fundamentals of Geology Examination?
To qualify, an applicant must document that either: 1) they have graduated from an accredited college or university with a degree in geology, engineering geology, or a related geological science; OR 2) they have successfully completed 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of courses in physical and historical geology, mineralogy, structural geology, igneous and metamorphic petrology, stratigraphy and sedimentation, field geology, hydrogeology, economic geology, geochemistry, paleontology, environmental geology, engineering geology, geomorphology, or geophysics, or equivalent courses as determined by CMU.
For currently enrolled students, documentation may be provided in the form of a letter signed by an active professor in their department or unofficial transcripts may be submitted. Graduates will need to provide an official transcript documenting their undergraduate degree in geology, engineering geology, or a related geological science.
When is the FG examination given?
The FG exam is given on the third Friday in March and the first Friday in October. Upcoming exam dates include:

Where is the FG examination given?
The FG examination must be taken at one of the testing facilities endorsed by the Examination Administrator (Prometric).
You may select a location in an adjacent state if it is more convenient than one located in Michigan.
How do I apply to take the ASBOG FG examination?
Application is a two-step process. First, complete the online CMU FG Examination Application. After your application is approved by CMU we will upload your information into the Prometric registration portal. Approximately 6 weeks prior to the exam, Prometric/Iso-Quality Testing (IQT) will email you instructions on how to register, pay, and select a testing location.
What is the deadline for applying to take the FG examination?
For March examination dates, the CMU application deadline is January 31st.
For October examination dates, the CMU application deadline is August 15th.
How much does it cost to take the FG examination?
There are three fees associated with taking the FG examination:
- $50 nonrefundable application fee payable to Central Michigan University
- $200 ASBOG FG examination registration fee
- $75 Prometric testing center seat fee
After I take the FG examination, when will I receive my results?
Results are sent to the candidates approximately 8-10 weeks after the date of the examination.
If I take the FG examination in Michigan, will my results count in any other states?
Yes. FG examination results are accepted by state boards in all ASBOG member states.
How can I prepare to take the FG examination?

What else do I need to know?
After registering for the examination using the Prometric/IQT Candidate Scheduling Portal, you will receive a Candidate Admission Letter, which you must print and bring to the testing center on the day of the exam.
A valid government issued photo identification (ID) with signature is also required for you to be admitted to the Examination. Approved forms for ID are driver's license, government issued ID card, passport, or military ID card. The name on the admission letter must match the name on the photo ID.
