We offer a number of mathematics scholarships - based on need, academic focus or career aspirations. Many are renewable, but require submission of a new application each year. Please remember to submit only ONE application even if you are applying for more than one scholarship.

Scholarship award selection process

The selection of a student to be awarded a scholarship will be made by a committee designated by the Department of Mathematics Chairperson.  The decision will be made on the basis of:

  • Two (2) CMU faculty references.
  • Grades in university/college courses, especially mathematics.
  • University/college mathematics courses completed.
  • A paragraph written by the applicant.
  • Other factors.

Available scholarships

Narayan Mathematics Scholarship

Eligibility: A recipient will be a signed non-teaching mathematics major. The recipient will have achieved junior status or higher, as defined by the minimum amount of credit hours required by the University. The recipient will have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Preference will be given to applicants demonstrating financial need.

About: This scholarship was established in 2020 to help students majoring in mathematics. Professor Sivaram Narayan joined CMU in 1988 after receiving his Ph.D. from Purdue University. He published many research articles in the areas of Operator Theory and Matrix Theory and supervised the Ph.D. dissertations of 12 doctoral students and the research of over 75 undergraduate students. He received funding from the NSF and directed two undergraduate research programs during 2002-2014. Dr. Narayan received several awards for his outstanding contributions to CMU.

Amount: The number, amount and recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by the Department of Mathematics in consultation with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

Brannan Family Scholarship

Eligibility: A recipient of this renewable award will be a full-time junior or senior admitted to the Secondary Mathematics Education program in the College of Science and Engineering. Renewal awards may vary and are contingent upon availability of funds.  Recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

About: The Brannan Family Scholarship was established in 2010 in honor of Samuel J. Brannan. Mr. Brannan earned his Bachelor of Science in 1959 and his Master of Arts in 1962 from Central Michigan University.    He was an instructor in the CMU Mathematics Department for 38 years.  Mr. Brannan was a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon and ROTC.

Amount: The number, amount, and recipient(s) of this Endowed Award will be determined by the Mathematics Department in consultation with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

Jennie Master Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics Education

Eligibility: A recipient of this renewable award will be a student enrolled in the College of Science and Engineering, Department of Mathematics. Renewal awards may vary and are contingent upon availability of funds.  Part-time attendance or withdrawal from the university will result in cancellation of the scholarship. Recipient will have an interest in pursuing a career in mathematics education, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

About: The Jennie Master Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics Education was established in 2016 by the estate of Jennie E. Master. Ms. Master received her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Central Michigan University and was valedictorian of her 1943 class.  She was a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon and Kappa Delta Pi and earned her Secondary Teaching Certificate in 1952.

Amount: The number, amount, and recipient(s) of this Endowed Award will be determined by the Mathematics Department in consultation with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.​

Nikoline A. Bye Endowed Award

Eligibility: A recipient will be a student enrolled in the College of Science and Technology who is a second semester junior or senior and who has been admitted to the Teacher Education program. First preference will be given to a mathematics major on the elementary curriculum. If no one meets this criteria, this scholarship may then go to a mathematics major on the secondary curriculum. The recipient should have a record of academic excellence as demonstrated by a GPA of 3.6 or higher on a 4.0 scale in the mathematics major and have at least one year left before graduation.

About: This endowed award was established in 2012 from the estate of Nikoline A. Bye,  who graduated from Midland High School, received her undergraduate degree from CMU in 1932 and her M.A. from the University of Michigan in 1941. She was an associate professor in the CMU Department of Mathematics for 32 years, from 1942 until she retired in 1974.

Amount: The number, amount and recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by the Department of Mathematics in consultation with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

Miller Mathematics Scholarship

Eligibility: A recipient will be a student who has 80 or more credit hours, has completed at least two semesters at CMU and is a mathematics major. Recipients must demonstrate financial need. Preference shall be given to students who have graduated from Michigan high schools. The recipient should be a good mathematics student, however serious consideration will be given to "late bloomers," students who may not have been strong students when they began their university studies but have shown steady improvement and are now good mathematics students.

About: In honor of Professor William Miller and his wife, Delores Miller, this award was established in 2005. Professor Miller was a Department of Mathematics faculty member from 1968-2000. He is a Michigan native who specialized in mathematics education and has a keen interest in problem solving.

Amount: The number, amount and recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by the Department of Mathematics in consultation with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

Richtmeyer Mathematics Scholarship

Eligibility: Underclass students will have completed or be enrolled in MTH 132 and will have accumulated less than 26 semester hours of university/college credit. Upper-class students will have completed or be enrolled in MTH 223 and MTH 133 and will have accumulated at least 30 semester hours of university/college credit.

About: Dr. Cleon C. Richtmeyer, former dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, former chair of the Department of Mathematics and a faculty member of CMU from 1924-1968, bequeathed a scholarship fund for students who major in mathematics. The fund will be used to award scholarships to students who are eligible in either one of the two categories, underclass or upper-class.

Amount: The actual amount of the scholarships will be determined by the available funds and the number of scholarships awarded.

Renewal: Renewal is possible for a student receiving an upper-class scholarship if the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA (3.5 in mathematics) and remains a mathematics major. This second year award will not be automatic; reapplication is necessary.

Jozefaciuk and Rutkowski Mathematics Scholarship

Eligibility: A recipient must be a junior or senior with a mathematics major, a Michigan resident and a U.S. citizen, have at least 56 semester hours of credit, and have a minimum GPA of 3.4 Engineering, computer science and statistics students are also eligible.

About: As a tribute to Frank and Rita Jozefaciuk, and Irene Rutkowski, their family created the Frank and Rita Jozefaciuk and Aunt Irene Rutkowski Endowed Award in 2005.

Amount: The number, amount and recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by the Department of Mathematics in consultation with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

Lester H. and Jack D. Serier Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: A recipient will be a Michigan resident with at least 56 hours majoring in mathematics and who has a record of academic excellence as demonstrated by a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference shall be given to students who demonstrate financial need.

About: In honor of Professor Lester H. Serier and his son, Jack D. Serier, the Lester H. and Jack D. Serier Endowed Memorial Scholarship fund was established in 2001. Professor Serier was a Department of Mathematics faculty member from 1939-1980. He served as department chairperson from 1958-1959 and again from 1961-1965.

Amount: The number, amount and recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by the Department of Mathematics in consultation with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

St. Andre Endowed Award

Eligibility: This non-renewable award is for a student who has sophomore standing at the time of application and who has a signed major in the Department of Mathematics. The recipient must be a Michigan resident and show good potential for being successful in their major.

About: The Richard and Karen St. Andre Endowed Award was established in 2004. Dr. Richard St. Andre was a Department of Mathematics faculty member from 1971 until his retirement in 2008. During that time, he spent several years in the Dean's Office as Assistant to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Associate Dean for the College of Science and Technology, and Interim Dean for the College of Science and Technology. Professor St. Andre is a Michigan native with a specialty in mathematics education. Karen St. Andre was a local realtor for many years.

Amount: The number, amount and recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by the Department of Mathematics in consultation with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

Whitmore Mathematics Scholarship

Eligibility: A recipient will have at least 86 semester hours of credit, including the current term, will have been admitted to Teacher Education, will have declared a mathematics major, have a grade point average of 3.6 or above in a mathematics major and have at least one year left before graduation.

About: Established by family and friends to commemorate the lives of Edward Hugh Whitmore, Bertha Harper Whitmore and Stephen Harper Whitmore for senior students who have earned a 3.6 or higher in their mathematics major.  Dr. Edward Whitmore was a mathematics professor between 1965 and his retirement from CMU in December 1987.  He served as department chairman from 1965 to 1974 and from 1976 to 1982.  Mrs. Bertha Whitmore was a science teacher for Mt. Pleasant Public Schools between 1966 and her retirement in 1987.  Stephen Whitmore, son of Edward and Bertha, was a partner with the New York law firm of Berlack, Israels, and Liberman.  He specialized in the areas of corporate finance and securities law.

Amount: The number, amount and recipient(s) of the scholarships will be determined by the Mathematics Department in consultation with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
