Course Reserves? What are those?

A student wearing a maroon shirt browses through books in the library stacks.

Are you a student paying hundreds of dollars in textbook purchases every semester? Are you a professor who wants students to read a chapter (or two) of a book without having to buy it? Well, look no further than Course Reserves!

Here at the University Libraries, we have a wonderful department that helps students and faculty members alike with their course materials when they need them. Course Reserves staff members scan and upload book chapters and articles to Blackboard shells for professors and provide physical books that students can check out from the library for a short period without having to purchase the book.

The Course Reserves’ physical materials are located at the Park Library’s second-floor Library Services Desk. Simply approach the staff with the call number, title, or class for which the material is needed and they’ll assist you with accessing it. Are you not sure what’s available at the library for your class? That’s an easy fix! Go to Smart Search on the library website, type in the name of your professor or your class designator (e.g., ENG 323), and change the dropdown option to Course Reserves. You’ll find the materials you can check out or access online, whether they’re at the Park Library, in the Clarke Historical Library, or in eBook form.

Professors, are you someone who hasn’t used Course Reserves but would like to after reading this amazing informational blog post? You’re in luck! You can contact Course Reserves at creserve@cmich.edu for more information and find out how we can meet your needs.
