Happy National Career Development Month! Commemorated each November since its establishment in 1967 by the National Career Development Association, this month is centered around helping people grow and improve both personally and professionally in their careers. This growth can be accomplished through completing workshops, independent study, and networking activities related to the job search and application process. Some topics that may be covered in these contexts include resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, or other activities.

The Central Michigan University Libraries seeks to support individuals in their career growth in a number of ways. One of these ways is through its extensive Career Advice collection. With more than 260 works, this collection provides information on many different career related topics, such as:

  • Finding the right job for you.
  • Organizing your job search.
  • Networking in person and online.
  • Using job search tools like LinkedIn.
  • Writing resumes and cover letters.
  • Learning interview skills.

This collection is a strong asset for current students. College is supposed to be a time of educational growth and career development. Libraries aim to provide up-to-date resources for students to succeed inside and outside of the classroom.

To strengthen support for students’ career development, the CMU Libraries have partnered with the Career Development Office by soliciting feedback about future collection growth and participating in interviews hosted by the office. According to the associate director of Career Development Erica O’Toole, the CMU Libraries and the Career Development Center seek to collaboratively “...create a support system to help students find resources and opportunities for their future.” Library staff members look forward to continuing to support the career-related needs of students well into the future.
