Loanable laptop program at CMU Libraries

At the Park Library, Library Services Desk, an employee is seen handing a closed laptop to a student patron after the student checked it out as a loan.

To better serve CMU students, CMU Libraries now have laptops that can be checked out for 2 weeks at a time. Launched in August 2024, this laptop program has become a success. The number of laptop loans during the fall 2024 semester increased elevenfold over the previous fall semester’s loan totals. While usage statistics show that laptops are rarely "on the shelf," the true measure of success is the gratitude expressed by students when they check out and return the laptops.

Students can check out a Windows or Apple laptop for up to 2 weeks and can use it as needed, for projects or as a backup if their own computer encounters issues. These laptops come with software already installed, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, Lockdown Browser and many more programs. A complete list of programs can be found here at Library Computers, Software, Printing, and Equipment

To borrow a laptop, go to the Park Library’s second-floor services desk, where friendly and helpful student employees are ready to assist.
