No matter where you are from, studying in another country can be difficult. CMU is dedicated to providing a safe and supportive community to all of our students. International students will find support services tailored to their specific needs.
We can help answer your questions on immigration and other government-related issues.
We'll help you navigate resources around campus that can help you successfully adapt to student life here at CMU, as well as provide cultural events and outings that will enrich your academic and social experience.
International Student Welcome Center
The International Student Welcome Center is a great place to start on your journey for becoming a CMU Chippewa! Our staff are committed to getting you the information and services you need for a smooth transition to the campus community. Services available at the welcome center include:
- Pre-arrival information to new students.
- Removing CMU account holds.
- Registration assistance.
- Assistance with completing orientation.

Academic resources
We're here to support you socially and academically. We offer a variety of resources to help you succeed in the classroom, including:
- Academic advising: Get answers to questions about your major.
- Mathematics Assistance Center: Find help specific to mathematics questions, from basic algebra to intermediate-level statistics.
- Supplemental Instruction: Review sessions for challenging classes to help you succeed.
- Tutoring services: Work one-on-one with a tutor if you need help with 100-300-level classes.
- Writing Center: Get help with every stage of the writing process, from brainstorming and outlining to editing.
Orientation
Before school begins, you’ll participate in a mandatory orientation session for new international students. During orientation, you’ll meet other new students, learn about resources available to you here at CMU and explore campus life. You’ll also learn about:
- Immigration regulations.
- How to adjust to American life.
- Campus activities and safety.
- Health services.
- English language testing.
- Student organizations.
- On-campus employment.
- Local transportation.
More information about orientation will be provided during your check-in session. You will receive access to the online pre-arrival resources when your I-20 is issued. It will contain information about the visa process, housing, health insurance and many other important topics.
Technology resources
For all things technology-related at CMU, the Help Desk is your resource. In addition to a dedicated team ready to help you, they also have 24/7 resources available. They can even help you understand and set up multi-factor authentication, which is needed to log in when using your Global ID.
