Reverse Transfer Agreements
It may be possible to earn an associate's degree if you transferred to CMU from a community college.
If you transferred to Central Michigan University from one of the institutions listed below before earning your associate's degree, it may be possible to earn that degree after transferring here, depending on your remaining requirements at your previous institution.
After earning the credits at CMU that your former institution determines are needed for your associate's degree, you may request your CMU transcript be sent to and evaluated by your previous institution. They will determine if you have earned the required credits to be awarded an associate’s degree.
Enhance Student Success with NSC’s Free Reverse Transfer Service
The Michigan Community College Association (MCCA) and the Michigan Association of State Universities (MASU) encourage your institution to adopt the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) Reverse Transfer service—a free and efficient tool that supports associate degree completion.
Why Reverse Transfer Matters:
By facilitating reverse transfer agreements, this FREE NSC service allows students to transfer credits earned at four-year institutions back to community colleges, enabling them to earn associate degrees. Reverse transfer initiatives help students achieve their academic goals and boost community college institutional degree completion rates.
How to Get Started:
- Attend and encourage your Registrar and IT leadership to attend the Informational Webinar coming up in March:
Join the NSSC Reverse Transfer webinar on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, from 1:00–2:00 PM (ET). Learn about implementation, student consent processes, and best practices for integrating the service.
2. Understand the Process
Adopting the service is straightforward:
- Encourage your Registrar's Office and IT leadership to work with regional NSC representatives (if needed) to set up accounts.
- Secure Student Consent:
- Admission Application Stage: Use approved FERPA-compliant language in your admission application to obtain student authorization to release their transcript (free service; no additional cost to the student) to NSC allowing for future reverse transfer of credit to be used for associate degree completion.
- This consent allows your community college to upload the student's credits to the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) for Reverse Transfer, facilitating associate degree completion in the future.
- Email Communication:
Send an email to the student body using approved FERPA-compliant language to request authorization. This consent grants your community college permission to upload the students' credits to the NSC for Reverse Transfer, supporting future associate degree completion. - Begin transmitting and receiving data for reverse transfer processing.
