TRIO Detroit Pre-College Programs

Our TRIO Detroit Pre-College Programs serve first-generation, income-eligible students within the TRIO Upward Bound and Talent Search. Both programs are committed to providing you with college access programming and leveling the educational field for all those we serve. You may remain in the program until graduation from high school.

Our Upward Bound Program at Central Michigan University supports and encourages promising students to prepare for successful college careers.

There are two (2) U.S. Department of Education Federally Funded Programs located in Northwest Detroit and Southwest Detroit. Each program serves approximately 63 students annually.

About Upward Bound

    The Central Michigan University – TRIO Upward Bound Project is a college academic preparation program for eligible students within our target schools. We offer tutoring, advising, test prep, counseling, cultural & social enrichment, and an intense (6) six-week summer program, which includes a residential living-learning experience. Upward Bound is federally funded (no cost to you) and is administered through the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C. Central Michigan University’s TRIO Upward Bound Program is one of many on college campuses across the United States, all of whose purpose is helping young people like you develop your potential to succeed in college. You remain in the program until graduation from high school.

    Highlights:

    • CMU TRIO has served Detroit since 1999.
    • Over 400 students have participated in the program.
    • 95% of students receive college acceptance.
    • Upward Bound students have been Gate Millennium Scholars.
    • 100% of students receive college scholarships.
    • Graduation and college rates have been between 90-100%.
    • Upward Bound has served the top ten percent of the graduating class.

    You'll remain in the program until graduation from high school.

    You may be eligible to participate if:

    • You are a U.S. Citizen or permanent residency status.
    • Attend one of the target schools.
    • Your household income meets the federal income levels (some exceptions allowed).
    • You are a potential first-generation college student (neither parent graduated from a four-year college).
    • Are interested in attending a college or university.
    • Ability to Participate in both Academic Year & Summer Academy Programs.

    *1/3 of students can be either income-eligible or first-generation college students

    Upward Bound - Northwest

    • Our longest-standing program was established in 1999.
    • Serving Detroit Collegiate Preparatory High School at Northwestern.

    Upward Bound - Southwest

    • Established in 2017.
    • Serving Voyageur College Prep High School and Western International High School.

    Central Michigan University's Educational Talent Search Project serves middle and high school students within Detroit Public Schools.

    About CMU's Educational Talent Search

      Talent Search Detroit Project (TSD) is a U.S. Department of Education federally funded program hosted by Central Michigan University.

      We serve 500 students in grades 6-12 in Southwest Detroit who attend a target school:

      • Academy of the Americas
      • Hope Academy of Detroit
      • Earhart Middle School
      • Clippert Middle School
      • Munger Middle School
      • Western International High School

      We provide academic enrichment, career exploration, and financial literacy and encourage you to graduate from high school and continue to and complete postsecondary education.

      Also, we offer SAT preparation, mentoring, educational field trips, cultural & social enrichment activities, college tours, summer programs and referral services.


      By participating in ETS, you would received many benefits, such as:

      You may be eligible to participate if:

      • You have completed the 5th grade or are at least 11 years of age
      • You are in grades 6th-12th
      • Attend one of the target schools
      • Your household income meets the federal income levels (some exceptions allowed)
      • You are a potential first-generation college student (neither parent graduated from a four-year college)
      • You are interested in attending a college or university
      • Able to participate in both academic year and summer academic programs (high school only)
