Central Michigan University Tartan

This year, CMU joins the dozens of U.S.-based colleges and universities who have developed and registered a distinctive tartan pattern with The Scottish Registry of Tartans, preserving forever the school’s history and colors. The design was created with input from the CMU community and provides a fun way to showcase our Fired-Up pride.

“Central Michigan University was founded on May 24, 1892. It was created as a “Normal College” to advance education in the Mount Pleasant, Michigan community. In 1895, Central became a public institution by an act of the Michigan Legislature and became a university in 1959. The student body voted to make maroon and gold the official school colors in 1924. Even though so much has changed over the last two centuries, the university’s values do not stray from those inscribed upon their seal in 1892: Sapientia, Virtus, Amicitia — wisdom, virtue and friendship.”
