Professor
Biography
James R. Morrison received the B.S. in Mathematics and the B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park, USA. He received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, both in Electrical and Computer Engineering, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. From 2000 to 2005, he was with the Fab Operations Engineering Department, IBM Corporation, Burlington, VT, USA. From 2005 – 2007, he was an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Central Michigan University. From 2008 – 2019, he was an Assistant and later Associate Professor with KAIST, Daejeon, South Korea, in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. He received tenure at KAIST in 2016. He served as Director of KICEP at KAIST from 2016 – 2019. He is currently a Professor of Electrical Engineering in the School of Engineering and Technology at Central Michigan University.
His research interests focus on next generation production systems and the orchestration of systems of UAVs. He has published over 100 peer reviewed journal and conference papers in these areas. His work has been externally funded by nearly $1.00 million from the Korean NSF (including a prestigious Early Career Professor Grant), KIDA (Korean Institute for Defense Analytics), Intel, Samsung, Hankook Tire, and others. He holds 14 patents in the US and Korea.
He currently serves as associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering (IEEE T-ASE), Flexible Services and Manufacturing (FS&M), and IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (IEEE RA-L). He has served on the organizing committees in roles including general chair and program chair for conferences in production systems (MASM and ISMI), automation (IEEE CASE), and UAVs (ICUAS) since 2012. He is the corresponding co-chair for the IEEE RAS Technical Committee on Semiconductor Manufacturing Automation and the chair of the technical advisory board for SmartFabs Corporation.
