Ph.D.

Professor with Tenure

Biography

Dr. Petersen is a Professor of Cell Biology, Genetics and Neuroscience. He received his B.S in Biochemistry, magna cum laude, from the University of Minnesota as well as his Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology. He was a post-doctoral Fellow with Dr. Susan Lindquist at the University of Chicago before joining the Faculty at Case Western Reserve University where he rose through the ranks to Full Professor. His research has spanned post-transcriptional mechanisms for controlling gene expression to the discovery of a novel genetic mechanism that regulates disease phenotype. For his scientific accomplishments he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2017. In education, Dr. Petersen has extensive experience in small group facilitation. He served as the Assistant Dean for Basic Science Education at Case and as the Assistant Director of their small group Program. He joined the Faculty at the CMU College of Medicine in 2017 and teaches cell biology, genetics and neuroscience.
