How our media arts master's degree grows digital storytelling expertise

Take your mass media knowledge to the next level by studying how the media works and influences society. Establish relationships with like-minded peers and faculty in small classroom settings. And have the chance to hone your technical skills as a versatile media producer and creator.

In our rigorous master's in media arts program, you'll have the chance to pursue one of four program tracks:

  • Electronic Media Studies
  • Electronic Media Management
  • Electronic Media Production
  • Film Theory and Criticism

You'll combine the theoretical with the practical. You'll complete a final research paper or thesis demonstrating your expertise in your chosen area. Masters students may also volunteer to participate in our student media organizations: Moore Hall Television, WMHW radio, Moore Media Records or the CMU Film Society. 

Some students earning a master's degree in media arts pursue doctoral degrees, while others pursue exciting careers in business, broadcasting, film, online media, marketing, teaching and more.

Highlights of our media arts graduate program

As a media arts graduate student, you will:

  • Specialize in one of four program tracks: electronic media studies, electronic media management, electronic media production and film theory and criticism.
  • Have an opportunity to apply for a graduate assistant position, with a stipend and full tuition waiver, to teach students in media labs.
  • Have the chance to acquire hands-on experience at our award-winning MHTV television station, WMHW radio station (Mountain 91.5 and 101.1 The Beat), news programming (News Central 34 and Sports Central) or record label (Moore Media Records).
  • Develop research skills as preparation for nationally-recognized Ph.D. programs or the media workforce.
