Studying pre-law

Pre-law Advising is crucial for students interested in law school to help you choose appropriate majors, minors, and classes, and to help you plan your undergraduate career in a way that boosts your law school applications, garners as much scholarship money as possible, and prepares you to succeed in law school.

Pre-law pathway highlights

As a pre-law student, you'll:

  • Develop law school skills: Attend workshops and events to prepare for the LSAT, build your resume, craft applications, explore careers, and network with legal professionals.
  • Connect with the legal community: Join Phi Alpha Delta to network with peers, meet law school representatives, visit schools, and attend law-related events.
  • Gain trial experience: Participate in Mock Trial Association to develop public speaking, critical thinking, trial skills, and legal knowledge through national competitions.
  • Learn more about social impact: Join the National Black Law Students Association to increase minority representation in law, support academic and professional success, and encourage positive community impact.

Pre-law careers

After graduating from CMU, most pre-law students continue on to law school to gain their Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree in order to practice law. Our students have gone on to study and practice in a wide variety of legal areas, including criminal law, civil rights law, business law, family law, sports law, international law, immigration law, and many others. Many alumni are currently practicing attorneys and judges located around the country. Other alumni began working in the legal field immediately after graduation as paralegals, court clerks, or in the criminal justice system. Others work in public service or have run for public office.
