Hearing Information

The hearing process

Students are encouraged to read Section 5.2 of the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities and Disciplinary Procedures for a complete description​ of Hearings.

The goals of the hearing process are:

  1. To determine if an act was committed which was in violation of the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities and  Disciplinary Procedures; and or,
  2. To Determine the sanction according to the provisions of the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities and Disciplinary Procedures.

When a student is scheduled to attend​ a University hearing the Conduct Proceedings Officer will assign a Hearing Officer or a Hearing Body to hear the case.  In situations where a student is facing suspension or dismissal, the student may choose which hearing forum they would like to hear the case.  

During the hearing, the student will have the chance to present their case, and explain why they feel they are not in violation of the Code of Conduct.  Students may bring witnesses and present evidence to support their case.  If a student plans on bringing a witness, they are encouraged to notify the Student Conduct Office 24 hours in advance.

It is the responsibility of the Hearing Officer or Hearing Body to hear and examine all the evidence available, to determine the facts in the case and to make a decision of whether the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities and Disciplinary Procedures has been violated.

A University Hearing Officer/Body presides at all hearings (5.2.3.4).  The Hearing Officer/Body may follow the procedures outlined below or modify it at their discretion.

What to expect during a university hearing

1. The Hearing Officer will make the opening statement, which includes the following information:

  • Date
  • Location
  • People present

2. The Hearing Officer will then request that the University present its case.
3. The Hearing Officer will then request that the Student present their case.
4. The hearing will then move into a time for everyone to ask/answer questions.
5. The University will present its final statement.
6. The student will present their final statement.

​​​​​​​​​Hearing Officer/Body reserves the right to raise questions, recall any person involved in the process or request additional information or materials.
