Dual Enrollment

Get a head start on your bachelor’s degree by taking college courses in high school with the dual enrollment program! In most cases, the credits you earn can be applied to your high school diploma and your college degree. Plus, your credits may be able to transfer with you when you're ready to attend college full-time.

Who can apply for dual enrollment?

Most dual enrollment students are high school juniors or seniors. We also accept other level students in exceptional cases. Keep in mind that these courses will be taught at a college-level, so you can expect them to be a bit more difficult.

To join the program, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a high school GPA of a 2.8 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Get approval for dual enrollment, your course selection and the school district tuition contribution (if applicable) from your high school counselor or principal.

Work with your school counselor to choose the right CMU course(s) each semester to make sure you’re satisfying all your high school requirements.

How to apply for dual enrollment

Step 1: Apply for free

Submit your application for dual enrollment with no application fee. You’ll only need to apply for dual enrollment for your first semester. If you’d like to continue taking classes after that, you’ll just need to complete a registration form.

Submit your application for dual enrollment as early as possible, or at least three weeks before the beginning of a new CMU semester.

Step 2: Submit your transcript

You’ll need to submit a copy of your high school transcript. Talk to your high school counselor to see how you can have your official transcripts sent to CMU.

Step 3: Meet with your counselor and select your courses

Work with your counselor to find a dual enrollment course. Dual-enrolled students can take classes that don't require prerequisites and have open seats available. Courses tend to reach capacity, so please make multiple selections in case your first choice is not available.

Step 4: Submit your course registration form

Once you’ve chosen your course(s), you’ll need to fill out a dual enrollment registration form.

Make sure you talk with your school counselor to know whether your school district is contributing toward your dual enrollment tuition or if you will be responsible for the full cost.

Once we receive your application, transcript and registration form, we'll work with you and your school counselor to enroll you in available courses.

Returning for another semester

If you have already dual enrolled at CMU, it’s a simple process to enroll for another semester! Work with your high school counselor to find another course through Course Search and complete another dual enrollment course registration form.

Once we receive your application, transcript and registration form, we'll work with you and your school counselor to enroll you in available courses. If you have any questions, email us at cmuadmissions@cmich.edu or give us a call at 989-774-3076.

Tuition and fees

As a dual-enrolled student, you’ll pay the standard lower-level tuition rate for undergraduate courses. You’re responsible for the cost of books and supplies, but you won’t have to pay the student service fee.

CMU also offers the Fire Up! Forward program for Michigan-based students, which is a growing list of courses aligned with state funding resources. That means there is low or no tuition expenses for you and your family.

If one of your parents works for CMU, you may use their employee tuition benefit for dual enrollment courses. Be sure your parent fills out the appropriate forms through your account before the semester begins.
