About CMU's "Avoiding Copyright Infringement policy"
This policy ensures that the intellectual property rights of the creators of original works, and copyright holders are observed, and to protect CMU from sanctions and penalties from copyright violations.

BACKGROUND
Central Michigan University (CMU) requires that its faculty, staff, and students comply with the United States Copyright Act of 1976 as amended, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 as amended, the Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization Act of 2002, and all other legislation related to the use and dissemination of copyrighted works. The University also requires that its faculty, students, and staff observe generally accepted academic standards and practices as appropriate when using copyrighted material.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that the intellectual property rights of the creators of original works, and copyright holders (including CMU-affiliated individuals), are observed, and to protect Central Michigan University, its employees, and its students from sanctions and penalties occasioned by copyright violations.
As a way to ensure that copyright law and best practices are observed and the copyrights of others are respected, the University promises to provide copyright information and educational opportunities to its faculty, staff, and students.
POLICY
Faculty, students, and staff shall download, possess, or store only lawfully acquired copyrighted materials and use, adapt, distribute, or perform them only in ways consistent with United States copyright legislation, associated case law, the principle of Fair Use, the rights of copyright holders, generally accepted academic standards and practices, and where applicable, the licensing agreements between the University and information providers such as online database vendors, journal publishers, and software companies.

Central Michigan University reserves the right to make exceptions to, modify or eliminate this policy and or its content. This document supersedes all previous policies, procedures or guidelines relative to this subject.
