BACKGROUND

The CMU life science research community, and the need for animal care, is rapidly expanding via strong faculty growth in the College of Medicine, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, College of Health Professions, and College of Science and Engineering. The Vivaria Advisory Committee was developed by the Vice President for Research in response to a directive from the Provost to develop a business model for vivaria use at CMU.

PURPOSE

This policy describes the purpose of per diem fees charged for the care and husbandry of animals.

DEFINITIONS

“Vivaria” for purposes of the per diem fees refers to the vivaria located in the Health Professions building, but may, at the determination of the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, be used to refer to vivaria in other campus locations where animal care is being provided.

POLICY

This policy establishes the approach to per diem rates for rodent housing and identifies where users can locate current rates. The university will maintain two per diem per cage rates, one for internal clients/users and the other for external clients/users. The initial internal per cage rates represent a 50% institutional subsidy of the actual husbandry costs, maintenance costs, and veterinary care costs. The Office of Research and Graduate Studies will review rates annually and determine if adjustments need to be made. Current rates can be located in the University Fee Listing. The Office of Research and Graduate Studies will use fee revenue to support vivaria for animal research.

PROCEDURE

At the beginning of each month, the Office of Research and Graduate Studies will initiate a journal entry to charge the per diem fees to all facility users.
